More Reflex: FN Reflex XL MRD
Posted by SF on Jan 14th 2025
The FN Reflex is an intriguing option. It possesses all the features that the P365 and Hellcat series of slimline pistols do and better qualities than the Glock 43X MOS, but it’s not nearly as popular. Part of it is recognition; people know of FN, but they really don’t “know” the company. Another aspect is marketing. Springfield and Sig Sauer invest a significant amount of money into various forms of digital marketing (i.e., social media). Finally, it arrived too late to the party. Had the reflex come out about the time the Hellcat did, it might be just as popular. Now, it’s just one of many options out there. Every brand has a gun like this.
However, its sales are enough to warrant expansion, which, like its competitors mentioned previously, means a gun with a higher capacity.
Reflex XL MRD
The FN Reflex XL MRD is a micro-compact semiautomatic pistol chambered in 9mm, featuring a 3.8-inch stainless-steel barrel. The pistol is hammer-fired (via an internal hammer), which is unique for this category of handgun. The benefits are easier slide manipulation, perfect for new shooters or ones with dexterity issues. The trigger then feels different from others. While promising, the pull-weight comes in a bit heavy at 5lbs. The standard magazine holds 15 rounds, but the Reflex XL ships with an 18-round extended magazine. The pistol includes tritium-filled night sights, an optics-ready slide for micro red dot compatibility, and is available in a non-manual safety configuration with multiple internal passive safeties. The firearm’s accessory rail is compatible with the 43X MOS versions of the SureFire XSC and Streamlight TLR-7 Sub flashlights. Finally, the Reflex XL has a reversible magazine release and comes with two interchangeable backstraps. All in all, it’s not a bad package.
Final Thoughts
This extension is necessary for the line. It effectively competes with the P365 X-Macro Hellcat Pro and the Glock 43X MOS. FN is a reputable company with a long-standing tradition and a dedicated but small fanbase. The street price will be $599, which is comparable to others like it in 2025.
