Affordable Spotter: Vortex Crossfire HD
Posted by SF on Jun 13th 2024
Spotting scopes are a tool that has increased in popularity in shooting sports. These optics are used by hunters for spotting game, and by bench rest shooters to see their tiny targets at far distances. But PRS, NRL, and other precision rifle leagues use spotting scopes to locate targets, spot hits and misses, and aid in holdovers. Unfortunately, good spotters are expensive, and the budget ones out there are lacking. Thankfully, Vortex Optics has rectified that issue with the new Vortex HD series of spotting scopes.
Crossfire HD
The new Crossfire HD spotter comes in three magnification ranges and offers straight or angled eyepiece options. The magnification ranges are as follows: 12-36x, 16-48x, and 20-60x. With increasing magnification comes increasing weight and lists as follows, 31oz, 44 oz, and 53 oz. For features, the optics come with Vortex’s HD optical system that delivers exceptional resolution while cutting chromatic aberration. The lenses are also multicoated to aid in light transmission and glare. The optics have Vortex’s Helical Focus for fast and fine focus adjustments and the spotters are all ARCA-Swiss compatible to work with a wide range of tripods.
However, the best part about these optics is the price. The smaller magnification optic’s street pricing is $199.99 and climbs to $299.99 for the higher magnification model. That’s a ton of value and a missing niche in the spotting scope market. The only thing this kit is lacking is a tripod. Vortex offers a plethora of tripods for various applications but doesn’t include a tripod to help keep costs down while allowing the end user to find one that fits their needs.
Final Thoughts
Will this optic compete with Vortex’s Razor line or other manufacturers’ premium offerings? No. But for the budget-conscious, or someone just starting in the sport, this optic offers a ton of value and gets their foot in the door. Moreover, the optic is an excellent choice for eastern deer hunters who don’t need to spot targets at the next mountain top. What’s important is that Vortex has created a thoughtful product for the budget-minded user. Not to mention, Vortex's VIP warranty covers the Crossfire HD Spotting Scopes, so the owner never has to worry. These will be available immediately.
